Music Scholarship Awarded to 6th Grader, Hannah Gatewood

Hannah Gatewood, a Warner Elementary student, has been selected by the Light Up the Queen Foundation to receive a Christian Salcedo Music Scholarship. Hannah has demonstrated strong aptitude, potential, and an interest in enhanced musical education.  The scholarship is an award of $1,000 to be used for the purchase of a new instrument and for music lessons. Hannah Gatewood will be taking guitar lessons at the Christina Cultural Arts Center this summer, and she will attend Cab Calloway School of the Arts in the fall of 2018.

The scholarship’s namesake Christian Salcedo was a local musician who passed away suddenly in July of 2016. Christian was a cherished and highly active performer within the greater Wilmington area and was also a beloved middle school teacher who loved to teach music, identify students with musical talent, and nurture that talent. This scholarship honors his legacy by continuing his work to promote and nurture a foundation in music for young people that fosters long-term interest, appreciation and continued learning.
